WASTE MANAGEMENT

"Agricultural Waste Management Project" - initiated and financed by the USAID Agriculture Program.

The purpose of the Project was to contribute to the introduction of an Agriculture Waste Management System (AWMS) for the horticulture sector to monitor, control and manage all the waste at various stages (from production to utilization) associated with an agricultural enterprise throughout agricultural production, in a manner that sustains or enhances the quality of environment and energy resources.

In the framework of the project, in tight cooperation with the UK-based consulting company “Walker Resource Management”, “Madenat Caucasus” LLC and the Georgian Employers' Association (GEA) the following documentation has been prepared:

1. A detailed study of existing waste management practices applied by agribusinesses involved in the Horticulture sector. This included the potential environmental risk and the gaps and challenges in light of national and international regulations/best practices;

2. A sector-wide recommendation for a specific group of beneficiaries, analysing the potential reuse, recycling and recovery pathways, alongside the technical and economic efficiency of proposed approaches, influencing factors and suggestions. The concept of AWMS and the basic elements of Waste Management Planning have been also covered.

3. Awareness raising materials (road map, brochure or similar) on best waste management practices specifically focused on the Horticulture Sector. This included an updated list of companies operating in Georgia and outside the country dealing with specific technologies applied at various stages of the waste life cycle;

4. Direct supervision to the company selected by the Agriculture Program in the design and implementation of a waste management plan, including but not limited to a description of the types and quantities of waste generated during operation, considering the waste raised from the materials imported to the site as well as from those generated on the site.
